AIM
For pupils to learn the list of 300 most frequently used words by means
of an individualised, multisensory programme.
Structure
(Group of 4-6 pupils: one
40 min session once per week)
- Pre-tests of 25 words.
- Individualised list of
10 words to learn for the following week. Words are linked where possible
to word families and pupils highlight the patterns. Mnemonics, syllabification
etc, are also used.
- Detailed instructions on
multisensory ways of learning the words are given and pupils are encouraged
to test themselves five times at home.
- 4. Individualised tests
given the following week and little certificates are sent home for parents
if the pupil gets 7 or more out of 10. Scores are also posted on the
classroom wall.
- 5. Fun reinforcement activities
using spellchecker games, computer games and board games are played
whilst pupils are waiting for their turn to be seen individually.
- 6. Pupils are retested every
4 weeks to see if words are being retained.
