Phonics is a very useful tool not only for the teaching of spelling but also for the teaching of reading - see 'Goswami and Bryant (1997: 148-149) Phonological Skills and Learning to Read. Hove: Psychology Press'.

As a school we feel that by supporting the spelling of these children in an active way during Primaries 2, 4 and 5 and by resourcing the Class Teachers of Primaries 6 and 7, a large number of children are benefiting from this partnership between Learning Support Teacher, Class Teacher and Parents.
