Alphabet Magic

Alphabet magic is a systematic phonics programme which we as a staff have devised and adapted from work done by Felicity Craig. We have her full support and East Lothian Council has published our material.

Alphabet magic is our Early Intervention Programme. As such it happens every day in the Early Years department of the school. It has been running for four years and now has a life of its own.

The Wizard is a key feature and we have made not a few!

One key aspect of Alphabet Magic is that there is no paper involved. The children learn through games. This is where partnership becomes most apparent. All the Early Years staff and myself and the rest of the Support for Learning team spend time and energy making up games - we now have lots! Some are better than others at visualising ways of teaching the children through games. Everyone shares their ideas.

Staff feel a genuine sense of ownership of the programme and because of this and their enthusiasm, Alphabet Magic changes and evolves continually. It is exciting and dynamic.

Parents also play an important role. We teach them about the programme, run workshops so that they can learn the skills and tell them about the Wizard's spells. They are also enthusiastic and they carry the programme forward at home.

We are looking forward to the session ahead. Who knows what the Wizard has in mind
