Raising Attainment in Credit Level Science
Lochgelly High School, Fife

Classes of up to 12 pupils are taught 1 period a week from October to May. This accounts for three periods a week in my timetable. I have taken the Credit Science syllabus/ learning outcomes and developed information sheets for pupils. Sheets are generally in colour, annotated and are taught through teacher led exposition, to enable all pupils, including those with Specific Learning Difficulties, access to the course. Also use CD ROMs in the Health & Safe Living section of the course. Pupils are not required to fill in sheets but are encouraged to enter into discussions, give personal examples etc, in relation to each topic. I try to relate local area issues/ examples into all the sections. I meet with APT Science when necessary and discuss aspects of each pupil's learning/ class learning. Evaluation takes place in prelim/class assessments given by class teacher. Class teacher still teaches pupils 3 periods per week the remainder of the General/Foundation course. I assess pupils by question/answer sessions at start of period i.e. Verbal responses. No written assessment in my class. I arrange all aspects of course i.e. resources and hence have control over content of delivery. I feel it has raised awareness of LSS in school. Pupils now recognise we are subject teachers as well as support teachers for the more able- not just for pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties. I am at present developing mind-maps for revision purposes.
