Technology
and Peer Tutoring in a Primary/Secondary
Liaison Programme for SEN
Why was this
partnership activity necessary - concerns, aims, difficulties etc?
Three main aims of this project are to develop …
- good working relations between
SfL staff and pupils with SENs entering S1
- their confidence vis a vis
the move to high school and ensure there is already a 'kent face'
- their ICT skills so they
can use the Brother portable computers to help with their work.
Where does
this partnership operate?
In each of our four associated primaries - Dykehead, Alexander Peden,
Allanton and Stane Primary Schools.
When does
this work happen?
One afternoon per week between January and Easter , during the timetabled
S5/S6 Peer Tutor class run by Support for Learning.
How does the
scheme work? How is it maintained, sustained and evaluated?
Three or four S5/S6 pupils from the Peer Tutor Group are selected to work
in each primary. By January these pupils are familiar with both doing
Peer Tutoring and using the course materials and the Brother wordprocessors.
They travel to the primary school with either a Support for Learning teacher
or a member of subject department who is in our Extended learning Support
Team. All pupils and staff involved take part in the project evaluation.
What are the
benefits? What difference does this partnership make?
- increase in pupils' confidence
about the move to high school
- SfL staff know these pupils
well before S1 entry and have direct experience of strengths/needs
- senior pupils also gain
confidence and develop personal and social skills through their involvement
in this project as well as taking Working with Others intermediate 1.
