Personnel Involved:

  • Parents of identified pupil

  1. Concerns raised by class teacher with parents of identified pupils.
  2. Meeting class teacher/ parents. Teacher outlines difficulties the pupil is experiencing, e.g. pencil grip, cutting, manipulation of fastenings on clothing. Meeting arranged parents/ Learning Support Teacher.
  3. Parents given advice on how to help their child at home. Medical History built up. Contact with the hospital is not necessary for the child to be included in the group. Parents encouraged to meet with the school doctor in the first instance to decide whether there should be a referral to hospital's Paediatric Occupational Therapy Department.
  4. If referred, child assessed by Paediatric Occupational Therapist. Report to parents, copy sent to school. Suggestions for activities included.
  5. Discussed with parents/ Learning Support Teacher. Consent sought for child to join group. If the child has not been referred to the hospital, the parents are still encouraged to allow the child to benefit from the activities.
  6. Weekly liaison meetings - Learning Support Teacher/ Classroom Assistants involved in carrying out activities.
  7. Activities four times weekly/fifteen minutes.
  8. Monthly liaison - Class Teachers involved -discuss progress, raise other concerns.
  9. Regular discussions - parents/school staff
  10. Hospital review/assessment every six months.
  11. Annually, Paediatric Occupational Therapist meets with all school staff involved.
